We dedicate a large part of our resources to developing and operating software. Our Open Infrastructure life cycle management renders low-cost data centers possible and ensures everything runs efficiently and effectively. With our expertise, we are improving data security and protection through enhanced OpenStack software. In order to combat climate change, Cloud&Heat is also striving to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers, not only through sophisticated hardware but also through dynamic software solutions.
Since 2012, we rely on a security-hardened software stack based on OpenStack, the Open Source standard for cloud infrastructures. Our main focuses are certified processes for full cloud security and long-term operation contracts, automated server virtualization for instant patch distribution, security-optimized network design and massive scaling incl. operations. This enables us to respond to the individual needs of our customers and allows us to tailor each solution.
Based on Open Infrastructure, and with our in-depth knowledge of all OpenStack services, we can easily monitor and maintain the life cycle of Virtual Machines (VMs), providing optimization and, when needed, recovery. VMs bring a number of advantages: centralized network management, reduced dependency on additional hardware and software, and safeguards against digital disasters for example. They are cost-efficient and enable an increase in flexibility and accessibility due to their fundamental characteristics. We are able to generate these quickly and dynamically on different servers, adapting each to the needs of the client.
SecuStack is a security extension for OpenStack developed by secustack, a joint venture between Cloud&Heat and secunet, by combining their expertise in cloud computing and IT security. SecuStack compounds OpenStack with enhanced security features: strict separation of tenants, end-to-end encryption, comprehensive key management, etc. This in turn enables clients with critical infrastructures to store and process data in the Cloud. This is especially vital for sectors such as public health and government, financial services, education, R&D and others which are currently unable to utilize the full range of benefits of the Cloud. SecuStack is fully compliant with Cloud&Heat’s OpenStack Lifecycle Management.
We are currently developing a software solution that increases the efficiency of data centers, both locally and in larger networks. Carbon footprints are transparently communicated to the data center operators and users. We are looking to move applications around rapidly and – depending on specific metrics – place them exactly where they are most effective.
In our opinion, data centers should be synergetically combined with the energy and heat market.
We provide the necessary software for this synergy.
We install our data centers with certified processes to help us achieve and maintain a high operating standard across all sites. With remote monitoring and life cycle management system, we can ensure security patches, new functionalities are updated and maintained, without needing to be on site. This allows us to distribute changes automatically and massively reduces the operating costs of all our data centers.

In order to fulfill the increasing security requirements of R&D facilities, industrial 4.0 applications, government agencies and banks, secunet Security Networks AG, one of the leading German providers of sophisticated IT security, and Cloud&Heat Technologies have entered into a cooperation agreement aimed at establishing a security-hardened cloud platform for critical infrastructure and data.
The joint venture, secustack, will create a new synergy, combining Cloud&Heat’s long-standing OpenStack and infrastructure experience with secunet’s unique competence in the area of secure system solutions, cryptography and highly complex key management.
A critical infrastructure (KRITIS) is a system, or part of a system, that is essential to the maintenance of social functions, safety and security, and the economic and social health of the population. Disruption or partial destruction of this would have a significant impact, since its functions could no longer be maintained. secustack has developed mechanisms to prevent this.
“Together, with Cloud&Heat, we have developed a highly secure OpenStack cloud solution. As the leading German provider for demanding IT security (e.g. high security solutions for the Federal Republic), we benefit from the comprehensive OpenStack know-how of Cloud&Heat.”
Dr. Kai Martius
CTO, secunet Security Networks AG
Cloud&Heat Technologies is one of several partners working with AUDITOR, a pilot project launched with the aim of developing exemplary implementation and testing of sustainable EU-wide data protection certification for cloud services.
We have been operating an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution based on OpenStack since 2012. The focus here is on data security and protection, operated in accordance with the German Data Protection Act, in order to offer potential cloud users a secure alternative to well-known American cloud providers.
“Cloud&Heat is essential for our project. From the very beginning, we have combined science and practice in a sensible way and have profited from each other very well due to the high technical expertise of both parties. I am very happy about this cooperation.“
Prof. Dr. Ali Sunyaev
Director at AIFB, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
