A starting signal for innovative IT security solutions: For our project „Kubernetes Artefact Transmission to Air-gapped Environments via Solar System Internet Protocols (KATESIP)“ we have developed a ESA Spark Funding received. We are thus launching an exciting spin-off project that brings state-of-the-art space technologies to the world of IT security.
What is KATESIP about?
At KATESIP, we work together with the D3TN GmbH as technology partners contributing their expertise and the space-proven μD3TN protocol stack, a prototype for a secure software supply chain. Other partner companies are involved as future users, while Cloud&Heat Technologies is contributing its expertise in cloud infrastructures, container platforms and Kubernetes to seamlessly integrate the basic D3TN technology into modern on-premises environments and cloud infrastructures with special requirements.
At the heart of the project are Delay-/Disruption-Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocols, in particular the D3TN Bundle Protocol, which also plays a central role in ESA’s planned “Solar System Internet”. These technologies were designed for communication under extreme conditions - high error rates, long latencies, and communication link failures - and offer particular potential for air-gapped infrastructures, where security, resilience, and isolation requirements are of the highest priority.
Our goal
With KATESIP, we enable software updates to be securely transmitted into fully isolated, highly critical environments - using unidirectional communication channels, i.e., without a return path. μD3TN ensures delay- and disruption-tolerant transmission, while Kubernetes, as the orchestration platform, automatically distributes the updates and deploys them directly in the target environment. This allows updates to be delivered efficiently, securely, and in compliance with regulations-particularly for critical infrastructures, government, finance, healthcare, or defense sectors.
Our vision
A new service that supports operators of such environments in efficiently, securely, and compliantly applying updates - without relying on the internet and without complex manual processes. What makes it special: The solution is highly innovative, leveraging current space technologies for secure software delivery in air-gapped IT infrastructures.
Why it matters
Air-gapped environments protect highly sensitive applications from cyberattacks. At the same time, they present significant challenges for operators when it comes to updates, upgrades, or operating modern cloud infrastructures. KATESIP addresses exactly this challenge - using space technologies to solve a real-world problem on Earth.
We are looking for additional partners
For the next project phase, we are seeking additional partners to jointly develop practical use cases or test our solution early - particularly from the fields of critical infrastructure, public administration, defense, healthcare, or finance.
