Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) is an open source platform based on Debian Linux that combines virtualisation and containerisation in a flexible, customisable and resource-efficient solution. The user-friendly, web-based administration interface makes it easy to use, while numerous functions are specially tailored to different company requirements. Open technology ensures a high level of compatibility with existing network and storage technologies, which facilitates integration into existing IT infrastructures.

The Proxmox Backup Server is a backup solution for enterprise environments. It is written in the Rust programming language to ensure secure and efficient storage of your backups.
Rust enforces storage security and error resilience, protecting your backup data from technical errors.

Deduplication is used as the storage technology for backups. This means that only changed data is transferred in the backup process, which saves network bandwidth and costs for the corresponding provision and can also provide valuable indicators for ransomware attacks.

Deduplication also enables very long-term storage of backup data. The fine-grained authorisation management allows detailed access regulations, e.g. to remote WORM (Write Once Read Many) copies, to protect them from unintentional deletion.

Both traditional tape copies and an integrated sync mechanism as well as removable data stores, e.g. via USB connection, are supported as mechanisms for offsite copies.

The Proxmox Backup Server is integrated with the Proxmox VE platform for backups at hypervisor level and can also be used with the PBS client software at file system level.

The Proxmox Backup Server runs on Debian Linux and is available as open source for the long term.
